Citation: Tips for Good Citation Practices

Citing other people's work is a critical component of your academic work at Hampshire!

Advice

  • Read your assignment prompt carefully and before beginning the assignment, and ask your faculty for clarification if necessary. Always make sure you know which citation style your professor wants you to use.
  • Insert in-text citations as you write, rather than going back when finished and inserting them then. You may forget! Alternatively, use your word processor's Commenting tool to make note of where you want to insert citations.
  • Have a friend read your work - a different reader may notice things you don't!
  • Proofread your work and don't assume your bibliography is correct - there will always be small changes to capitalization and punctuation you will likely need to make
  • Seek help from the Writing Program or a librarian
