Citation Generators

When searching in the Five Colleges library catalog (Discover), each result will have the option to "Cite."
This functionality is found on the right side of the page when you are looking at an individual search result

Databases (for example, JSTOR) usually have a citation generator tool built into their functionality. Look around for these tools when you're searching in a database.

Purdue University's OWL website also provides a citation generator.
 

Citation Management Tools

Citation managers are tools that collect references, store and organize references, and format bibliographies. Some tools also have advanced features. There are many citation management tools on the market. No "one size" fits all. Wikipedia contains a comparison of reference management programs' features. Libraries typically support and use one or more of these tools: EndNote, Mendeley, RefWorks, and Zotero.

No matter which one you choose to use, you should still check that citations are formatted correctly. Don't rely on the generator/citation management system, as sometimes these do not format correctly.

Some of the more commonly used managers are listed below. Librarians are happy to help you with learning more about any citation management tool, however most of our experience and knowledge are with Zotero. You can find Zotero information listed on a separate tab.

EndNote

EndNote has been around since the 1980s. Produced by Clarivate Analytics. While it is proprietary and fee-based, they offer EndNote Basic for free. EndNote Basic allows saving of up to fifty thousand references and formatting in seven common bibliography styles.

Mendeley

Mendeley is a free (with optional fee-based upgrades) reference manager system owned by Elsevier. Mendeley is more popular among the sciences. Mendeley does not integrate with Google Docs. It works with Microsoft Word.

RefWorks

Produced by ProQuest. Available only by paid subscription. Integrates with MS Word and Google Docs. Web-based, but allows users to sync their full-text content with Dropbox accounts. Collaboration features available. More information: RefWorks.

Word Processing Applications Tools

Microsoft Word has a built-in reference tool (References >> Insert Citation). You will need to manually enter citation fields. The number of citation styles is limited, as is the types of materials you can reference.
